Vertebral Subluxation
Vertebral Subluxation is term used to describe when one or more of the bones in your spine is out of normal position or has abnormal movement. The subluxation then puts pressure or irritates the spinal nerve that is leaving at that level. Furthermore, spinal nerves are nerves that come out from narrow openings between the bones in your spine. The spinal nerves are an important part of the communication line between your brain and your body. This pressure or irritation causes the nerves to malfunction and a miscommunication can occur between brain to body and body to brain. A vertebral subluxation is usually described as a complex which involves: spinal bones, nerves, muscles, soft tissue, and chemical components.
What causes subluxations?
A vertebral subluxation can be caused by the 3 T's... thoughts, traumas, and toxins. The most common causes of subluxations are: falls, car accidents, poor posture, obesity, incorrect lifting, occupational hazards, lack of rest or exercise, poor diet, repetitive movements or postures, along with everyday stress.
How can this affect you?
Your nervous system controls and regulates every single thing in your body. It is the electrical wiring to your body. If the signals between the brain and body are interrupted, dysfunction begins to happen and the body stops working at its optimal potential or 100%. Furthermore, Irritated nerves caused by subluxation can cause more issues than just pain. For example, if the nerves leaving the spine are going to your digestive tract and they are being irritated by a subluxation, you could be experiencing dysfunction such as constipation, irritable bowel, ulcers, gastritis, indigestion, heartburn, etc. By removing that subluxation, pressure is being taken off the nerve and the signals from brain and body are no longer interrupted and are communicating again at 100%. Furthermore, your body can begin to heal. Your nervous system controls every organ, cell, tissue and function in your body. For your body to function at its full potential and for you be in optimal health, the nerve signals must be able to flow through the spine freely and that is done by removing subluxations!
No pain= no subluxations?
This statement is a common misconception. Just like many health problems such as a cavity or heart problems the early stages are often symptom free. It isn't until the later stages when damage has already occurred when you experience symptoms. A spinal problem may exist for years before causing problems.
How are vertebral subluxations corrected?
Doctors of Chiropractic are specially trained to detect and correct any subluxations which may be interfering with the nerve signals in your body. Your chiropractor will conduct a full exam including history, neurological, orthopedic and postural evaluations and possibly x-rays if deemed necessary. A chiropractor uses an adjustment to restore normal motion and position to the spinal bones.
